433 Madison Ave. SE

Our home is a 6,000 square foot, 1880 Queen Anne Victorian home located in the heart of Historic Heritage Hill in Grand Rapids, MI.

The home was built for George and Emma Peirce. He worked in the financial aspect of a variety of businesses — railroads, furniture and banking. Mr. Peirce was the son of Peter R.L. Peirce, mayor of Grand Rapids.

In the 1910's, the house was sold to Charles and Nancy Phelps. Mr. Phelps was president of Century Fuel, and secretary/treasurer of the Hackley-Phelps-Bonnel Lumber Company. Sadly, he passed away in 1918, but Mrs. Phelps stayed in the house until 1926.

From then until 1945 Arthur and Florence Perry lived here. Mr. Perry was the president of the Foster Stevens Hardware Company.

As with many houses in Heritage Hill, the home was divided into apartments in the 1940's to accommodate the high demand for housing following World War II. It has since been converted back to a single-family residence.

Architectural Details

Notable features include a deep, covered porch leading into an enchanting 30-foot quarter-sawn oak hallway. To the right, a library with a cherry wood fireplace and massive bay windows. On the other side is the 35-foot long Great Room with pocket doors and a fireplace. Original stained-glass windows frame the home's three-story oak staircase.
